If someone had told me a year ago that I\u2019d be crouched in the backseat of a taxi, clutching my last emergency $120 while watching my husband walk into a building I\u2019d never seen before, I would\u2019ve rolled my eyes.<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t the dramatic type. I didn\u2019t snoop. I didn\u2019t spiral.<\/p>\n
But there I was\u2014coat wrapped tight around Nicole\u2019s stroller, Micah\u2019s spare snack bag digging into my ribs, my stomach rolling like I\u2019d swallowed something sharp.<\/p>\n
And it all started with yogurt.<\/p>\n
Not fancy yogurt. Not imported, probiotic, grass-fed yogurt. Just the cheap vanilla kind with a little green dinosaur on the lid. Micah adored it. Every time we passed the dairy section, he\u2019d curl his tiny fingers into claws and growl, \u201cRawr!\u201d<\/p>\n
The last time I reached for it, Michael slapped my hand away.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe doesn\u2019t need that, Florence,\u201d he muttered. \u201cWe need to save.\u201d<\/p>\n
The way he said we, you\u2019d think I wasn\u2019t already stretching pasta into three meals, hand-washing secondhand baby clothes, skipping lunch so the kids could have fruit instead of crackers.<\/p>\n
But control never announces itself. It seeps in.<\/p>\n
After Nicole was born, Michael suggested I stay home \u201cjust for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMicah\u2019s almost three. Nicole\u2019s a newborn. They need you, Flo. Daycare would cost a fortune.\u201d<\/p>\n
He wasn\u2019t wrong. I was exhausted. Breastfeeding felt like running a marathon every day. My body didn\u2019t feel like mine yet.So I agreed.<\/p>\n
At first, we were fine. Friday night pizza. Laughter in the kitchen. Early mornings that felt soft instead of tense. I did freelance design work during nap times\u2014enough to afford small things, enough to feel like I still existed outside of diapers and dishes.<\/p>\n
Then Nicole turned one.That\u2019s when the spreadsheets appeared.<\/p>\n
Michael would sit at the kitchen table, laptop open, muttering about inflation and \u201clong-term security.\u201d He started saying things like, \u201cJust until we stabilize.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stabilize what? We weren\u2019t unstable.<\/p>\n
When I mentioned a toy car Micah had loved\u2014an updated version for his birthday\u2014Michael shook his head.<\/p>\n
