He kept rereading the line about divorcing him after convincing me to sell my house. She stared at him in shock before grabbing her purse and storming toward the door, still clutching the designer handbag I had given her only minutes earlier. The front door slammed behind her hard enough to shake the windows. Then my son collapsed onto the couch, covered his face with both hands, and began sobbing with the kind of grief I had only heard once before\u2014at his father\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

Between broken breaths, Eddie apologized over and over. \u201cI let her turn me against you,\u201d he choked out. \u201cI thought you were being selfish about the house. God, Mom\u2026 tonight\u2026 what I said to you\u2026\u201d I held his trembling shoulders and told him the truth. \u201cYou trusted someone you loved. That\u2019s not weakness.\u201d But inside, my heart still ached for the little boy who had unknowingly married a predator. Because Moren hadn\u2019t just targeted my home.
