Emily found refuge at the apartment of her best friend, Rachel, a nurse who immediately recognized the damage without asking unnecessary questions. As Rachel helped care for her bruised cheek, Daniel, Vanessa, and Daniel\u2019s mother flooded her phone with messages ranging from anger to guilt and demands for forgiveness.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Rachel took Emily to the courthouse, where she filed for a temporary protective order. The paperwork was difficult, but writing down exactly what happened forced Emily to confront the truth. Later that day, attorney Marjorie Klein reviewed the evidence and advised her to seek an immediate divorce while cutting off all direct contact with Daniel.<\/p>\n

Daniel reacted exactly as the lawyer predicted. First came angry messages blaming Emily for ruining his reputation. Then came apologies, excuses, and declarations of love.
