My 74-year-old neighbor made me promise never to remove the withered roses between our houses. After she passed away, I finally dug them up and discovered an old doll bearing my mother’s full name. When I called Mom and mentioned my neighbor’s name, she fell silent before whispering, “That woman gave birth to me. She was your grandmother.” My mother had been adopted at birth, and decades later, her biological mother had found her and begged for a second chance, but Mom, unable to forgive being abandoned, had refused and told her never to return. Respecting her daughter’s wishes, my grandmother bought the house next door, choosing to remain close without revealing who she was. She became the loving neighbor who supported me, baked cakes for my children, and knitted them sweaters, giving our family the love she could never openly offer her own daughter. The doll buried beneath the roses was the only gift she had ever bought for my mother as a newborn. She planted those roses to protect a secret she had carried for a lifetime, hoping the truth would one day come to light. She could never be my mother’s mother, so she became my neighbor instead—and the roses she left behind became her final confession of a love that never died.
