My father casually announced over dinner that his girlfriend, Tammy, and her two adult sons were moving into Aunt June’s small two-bedroom house on Saturday, insisting that it was his house and that I had always paid the bills anyway. I was stunned because six years earlier, after Dad lost his apartment following his early retirement from the foundry, I discovered he was sleeping on a friend’s couch and too proud to ask me for help. Around the same time, Aunt June passed away, leaving her little house to a relative who wanted to sell it. Knowing my father needed a stable place to live, I contacted the owner and negotiated the price down from $72,000 to $64,000, hoping to give Dad a safe place to start over. When I arrived to check the water heater that Tuesday evening, I never expected him to announce that Tammy, whom I had met only twice, and her sons, aged 31 and 28, would be moving in without asking me. What hurt most was hearing him claim ownership of a house that had two names on its deed—and neither belonged to him. I drove home wondering how the man I had worked so hard to help could act as though my sacrifices meant nothing.
