I arrived at my former home and felt a wave of fear when I saw police cars with flashing lights in the driveway. My heart dropped as I jumped out of a moving taxi and ran toward the building where I had lived until last week. My stepdad appeared on the porch looking much older and his eyes were swollen from many hours of crying. He could
not find the words to explain what happened and simply pointed toward the living room where officers were standing. I saw a shape covered with a white sheet on the sofa and realized that his son had died suddenly
My stepdad sat beside me and began to sob while admitting that he had treated me poorly during our time of grief. He confessed that his anger had blinded him and he apologized for allowing his son to be cruel to me before I was kicked out. He admitted that he had failed to protect me and that he was deeply sorry for the pain he caused.
My stepdad then pulled a folder from his bag and explained that he had found the legal will of my mother the night before. He handed me the documents that she had signed several months before her unexpected passing.
The legal papers revealed that my mother had left the house to both of us and had set aside a significant amount of money for my education. I also found a handwritten letter inside the folder that was meant specifically for my eyes. My mother wrote that I was the greatest gift of her life and she urged me to remain strong and kind throughout my life.
Reading her words allowed me to finally release the heavy burden of doubt and sadness I had been carrying. I realized that she had always planned for my future even when she was no longer there to hold my hand.
I decided to stay with my stepdad for several days so we could grieve our losses together and speak with complete honesty. He continued to apologize for his past mistakes and I chose to believe in his sincerity as we started to heal. I eventually used the savings from my mother to move into a small apartment near my college so I could focus on my career.
Our relationship is still growing and we have learned to treat each other with a new level of respect and understanding. I am no longer bothered by the heartless words of the past because I finally know that my mother loved me.
