My child with Leonardo Hayes needed a kidney transplant. I was the only match.
Of course, I didn’t hesitate. A mother would do anything for her child.
But after the surgery, everything changed.
When I woke up, Leonardo sat by my bed, holding back tears.
“Claire… I’m so sorry. The operation… it wasn’t successful. We lost the baby.”
I felt my world collapse. My cries echoed through the hospital halls until everything went dark again.
Later, while lying still, I heard voices outside my room — thinking I was asleep.
“Mr. Hayes,” the doctor said softly, “Claire’s kidney went to Samantha’s child. But… your own baby—”
Leonardo’s voice was low, controlled. “I had to keep a promise. To protect Samantha and her child.”
The doctor hesitated. “But Claire’s baby was your child too…”
“She doesn’t need to know everything,” Leonardo replied coldly. “I’ll suggest adoption. She’ll recover.”
Then something made my blood run cold.
“Also,” he said, “while she’s still under care, make sure the future is… handled.”
The doctor was uncomfortable. “You mean…?”
Leonardo nodded. “I can’t risk complications. One child. One legacy.”
The doctor sighed. “This will change her forever.”
Leonardo looked away. “She’ll learn to live with it. We all do.”
