First Impressions Aren’t Always What They Seem

I matched with him on a random Tuesday night, and what began as casual small talk quickly turned into effortless conversations that stretched past midnight. We shared the same humor, the same taste in movies, and the same easy rhythm. After a few weeks of messaging, we decided to meet in person.

On the day of the date, I felt excited but nervous, changing outfits and overthinking everything. When we met at the café, he looked just like his photos—polite, warm, and approachable. The conversation flowed naturally, but I immediately noticed his strong scent. It wasn’t unpleasant, just overpowering, and it kept distracting me despite how well everything else was going.

Instead of silently judging him, I chose honesty and gently asked about the cologne. He admitted he was worried about not smelling fresh enough and had likely used too much. Realizing his intensity came from nerves rather than arrogance changed my reaction completely, and my frustration softened into understanding.

We finished the date laughing, and I left without knowing if it would turn into something more. Still, I walked away with a lesson: sometimes what seems like a flaw is simply effort misplaced, and first impressions deserve curiosity before judgment.
