What a Designer Bag Showed Me About Wealth and Perspective

I lived with a girl in college who was Crazy Rich Asian–level rich. Whenever we went out, she carried a tiny mini-bag purse that looked elegant and chic, almost too small to hold anything. One weekend I asked if I could borrow it for a concert. She smiled and said, “Oh sure, no problem.”

I wore it that night and felt like a completely different person — confident, stylish, almost glamorous. It made me think maybe I could save up and buy one for myself someday. Later that week I looked it up online, and my jaw dropped when I saw the price.

The bag cost more than an entire semester of my tuition. I sat there staring at the screen, half laughing and half panicking, realizing I had been walking around with something worth more than nearly everything I owned. The next morning I returned it to her carefully, treating it like fragile glass. When I told her I hadn’t known how expensive it was, she simply shrugged and said, “It’s just a bag.”

That moment stayed with me long after college. To her, the bag was casual and replaceable; to me, it was unimaginable luxury. It reminded me that value often depends on perspective. What seems ordinary to one person can feel extraordinary to another, and real wealth is found in gratitude, humility, and appreciating what we have. ✨
