Coworkers From Hell Who Deserve Their Own HR File

For my birthday, a coworker I barely got along with surprised me with a small, neatly wrapped box. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace—simple, elegant, and exactly my style. “Thought it matched your vibe,” she said with a soft smile. I was caught off guard. We’d never been close, but maybe this was her way of making peace. I thanked her, genuinely touched, and from that day on, I wore it almost everywhere.

Over the next few months, that necklace became part of me. I wore it to big meetings, important presentations, and even on dates. It felt like a small reminder that maybe people could surprise you, that even difficult dynamics could shift into something better. I didn’t question it. I didn’t look too closely. Two words: “Office Joke.” My stomach dropped. At first, I thought it had to be some kind of mistake. But the longer I stared at it, the colder I felt.

When I finally asked around, the truth hit harder than I expected. She had told others it was a dare—that she gave me a “joke gift” just to see if I’d wear it, proving I’d fall for anything that looked expensive. There were even photos of the engraving shared as part of the punchline. I didn’t say much after that. I threw the necklace away, but not before keeping the receipt—and making sure the joke didn’t end the way she expected.READ MORE BELOW
