The Voice on the Baby Monitor

While babysitting for my sister, I noticed the baby monitor suddenly light up at 3 a.m. I checked, but the baby was sound asleep. Then, a voice whispered through the speaker: “He’s not okay.”

Panic set in as I called my sister. Her reaction made my blood run cold.

“Grab my son and run to the car! Lock the doors and call 911!” she yelled.

She admitted she’d been hearing strange noises through the monitor too, and it had been unsettling her for days. As we spoke, I caught a glimpse of a shadow moving outside my nephew’s bedroom window. My breath hitched when I noticed the window was open—a window we always kept closed.

I didn’t waste another second. I grabbed my nephew and bolted to the car. The police arrived and searched the area but found nothing. They later told us that the baby monitor model we had was known for picking up “strange sounds,” with several similar complaints reported.

We replaced the monitor, and the noises stopped. But I know what I saw. That shadow. That open window. The memory still sends shivers down my spine.
