SHE HANDED ME A BROOM AT MY FATHER’S FUNERAL — SHE DIDN’T EXPECT WHAT CAME NEXT

The last pieces of their power disappeared quickly after that. Mr. Voss informed Caleb that his company access had already been frozen and the luxury car purchased through stolen corporate funds was being repossessed. Caleb looked like he might collapse. Marissa tried threatening lawsuits, screaming insults, and blaming grief for everything she had done, but nobody in the room stood beside her anymore. Cowards vanish the moment consequences arrive.

The security officer escorted them toward the front door while rain hammered the driveway outside. Caleb begged me to delete the livestream before sponsors saw it. Marissa screamed that I was destroying her life. I simply reminded her that the cameras were still recording every word. They stumbled into the storm wearing expensive funeral clothes and expressions stripped bare of power, arrogance, and certainty. For the first time since my father died, the house finally felt quiet.

Three months later, Marissa accepted a plea deal for fraud and elder financial abuse after investigators uncovered even more stolen money hidden through shell companies. Caleb lost his sponsors, his online platform, and nearly every friend who once followed him for status and luxury. Their own greed buried them deeper than I ever could have. Meanwhile, Hale Maritime survived the scandal and expanded stronger than before.

I restored my father’s study exactly the way he left it. The oak desk gleamed beneath the brass lamp again. His portrait returned above the mantel. Some evenings, I open the windows and let the sound of the bay drift through the room while sunlight stretches across the floorboards. And sometimes I remember the broom Marissa shoved into my hands at my father’s funeral. They believed it was my inheritance. They were wrong. It was simply the last thing they handed me before I swept them out of my life forever.
