I finally went on a date with my longtime college crush, the most popular girl on campus. Wanting to impress her, I took her to the most expensive restaurant in town. Everything was going perfectly until I found a hair in my $26 drink.
When I called the waiter over, he quietly told me he had seen my date place the hair there while I was in the restroom. Confused and embarrassed, I chose not to confront her and simply finished the evening as if nothing had happened.
Later, after dropping her off, she hugged me goodbye and slipped something into my pocket. When I checked, I found $300 in cash. Feeling insulted, I immediately called her and demanded an explanation.
She admitted she had overheard me talking about struggling to pay my mother’s hospital bills and skipping meals to help my family. She had hoped the restaurant would comp our meal because of the hair, and when it failed, she wanted to help another way. It was awkward and misguided, but it came from genuine kindness. We never became a couple, but she remains one of the most caring friends I’ve ever had.
