The Second Day I Walked Away

Emily found refuge at the apartment of her best friend, Rachel, a nurse who immediately recognized the damage without asking unnecessary questions. As Rachel helped care for her bruised cheek, Daniel, Vanessa, and Daniel’s mother flooded her phone with messages ranging from anger to guilt and demands for forgiveness.

The next morning, Rachel took Emily to the courthouse, where she filed for a temporary protective order. The paperwork was difficult, but writing down exactly what happened forced Emily to confront the truth. Later that day, attorney Marjorie Klein reviewed the evidence and advised her to seek an immediate divorce while cutting off all direct contact with Daniel.

Daniel reacted exactly as the lawyer predicted. First came angry messages blaming Emily for ruining his reputation. Then came apologies, excuses, and declarations of love. When flowers mysteriously appeared at Rachel’s apartment despite Daniel not knowing the address, Emily became even more certain she had made the right decision.

Support slowly gathered around her. Her mother initially questioned whether one incident justified ending a marriage, but changed her mind after seeing the photographs of Emily’s injuries. Her father arrived soon afterward and reminded her that Daniel’s actions were his responsibility alone-
