THE PHONE CALL THAT ENDED THEIR FREE VACATION

I answered Ethan’s call on speakerphone. Before Amanda could say a word, he sounded confused. “Mom, why am I getting alerts from the security system and photos of my relatives at your beach house?” Amanda’s face lost its color. Apparently, she had told him I had invited everyone myself. Calmly, I sent him the pictures of my belongings stuffed into garbage bags and the damage throughout the property. The silence on the line lasted several seconds.

Less than two hours later, Ethan arrived. He walked through the house, taking in the broken pots, the cigarette burns, the overflowing trash, and the guests treating the place like a hotel. Then he saw the bags containing my clothes and family keepsakes. “Who thought this was acceptable?” he asked. Nobody answered. For the first time all weekend, Amanda and her relatives had nothing to say.

By sunset, every guest was loading suitcases into their cars. Amanda’s mother complained. Her brother argued. One teenager muttered that I was overreacting. Ethan ignored them all. He informed Amanda that she would personally pay for every repair, every damaged item, and every hotel expense. When she protested, he handed her copies of the photographs and security footage she never knew existed.

A month later, the house was restored and peaceful again. The flowers had been replanted, the furniture repaired, and the ocean breeze no longer carried the sound of unwanted guests. One afternoon, Ethan stopped by with new geraniums and quietly apologized for betraying my trust. I smiled and accepted them. Amanda never returned to the beach house. In fact, after the way she revealed her true character, she wasn’t part of the family much longer either
