The Gate Stayed Closed

Their confidence collapsed almost instantly. The celebration they had imagined was gone, replaced by embarrassment and silence.

One by one, the movers began loading equipment back into the trucks. No furniture came out. No boxes crossed the gate. There was simply nothing for them to take.

Neighbors watched quietly as Diane, Grant, Audrey, and Nolan returned to their vehicles. The same people who had arrived expecting victory now looked desperate to leave unnoticed.

Before driving away, Grant paused and looked at me one last time. “I never thought you’d do this,” he said softly. I smiled and replied, “That was your mistake.” As the trucks disappeared down the road, the gate remained locked, the mansion remained mine, and for the first time in years, I felt completely free
