Five years after my roommate mysteriously disappeared, I was preparing to sell our house and finally clear out her old room. She had been a bright, cheerful young woman, and despite extensive police searches, no trace of her was ever found. Over time, even her parents lost hope of discovering what had happened.
While moving a dresser, I noticed a small hidden hole in the wall. Curious, I reached inside and pulled out a stack of notes. To my shock, every note contained the same urgent message: “If I ever disappear, you need to search for me at Jake’s cabin in the mountains.”
Jake was her boyfriend at the time. Although she loved him deeply, she had often mentioned his possessive behavior and unpredictable temper. I remembered those comments only vaguely, never imagining they could be connected to her disappearance.
The notes were immediately turned over to the police, but by then five years had passed. Jake had long since vanished, reportedly leaving for Europe, and investigators had little to work with. The case remains unsolved, but discovering those hidden notes left me haunted by the possibility that the clues had been there all along.
