A few days later, my niece Olivia unexpectedly showed up at our house with her father. She looked embarrassed as she handed Emma a small friendship bracelet she had made herself and quietly apologized for everything that had happened.
Olivia admitted she never knew Grandma had been collecting money from Emma. She even said she would have gladly skipped horse camp if it meant her cousin wouldn’t have to work so hard just to make someone else happy.
Watching the two girls laugh together reminded me that children rarely create these kinds of problems. More often, they simply inherit the unfair expectations adults place on them.
