Eighteen months later, I was shopping for groceries in Portland with Lily happily sitting on my hip when I heard someone call my name. I turned around and found Daniel standing only a few feet away. He looked older, thinner, and far less confident than the man who had left us.
Standing beside him was a stylish woman with one hand resting on her pregnant belly. Before Daniel could introduce us, I noticed baby-blue decorations inside their shopping cart. Then Evelyn appeared, smiling proudly as though life had rewarded every cruel decision she had ever made.
