My father frowned while my mother slowly opened the envelope. Within seconds, her hands began trembling so badly she nearly dropped the papers. Dad grabbed them, read the first page, and all the color disappeared from his face.
Inside were three documents. The first was my grandfather’s final amendment to his trust. The second was a signed inheritance waiver my parents had willingly agreed to fifteen years earlier. The third was the preliminary fire investigator’s report.
According to investigators, the fire had started inside the locked equipment shed. Even more troubling, the report confirmed only one spare key still existed outside our family—and it had never been returned by my father after borrowing it years before.
The room fell completely silent as my parents realized those documents answered far more questions than they had expected-
