The Son Who Stayed

I’m seventy-eight years old and raised my three biological children on my own. Years later, I adopted a little boy named Brandon, and from that day forward, he became just as much my child as the others. As adults, my three older children became busy with their own families and careers, but Brandon always stayed close, calling often and helping whenever I needed him.

For years, I planned to divide my inheritance equally among all four of my children because I never saw any difference between them. Then my oldest daughter arrived with legal documents that would give my three biological children power of attorney over my finances and medical decisions—while leaving Brandon completely out. She insisted I was becoming forgetful and claimed the paperwork was only meant to protect me.

She also accused Brandon of being deeply in debt and hinted that he had other serious problems. The accusations shocked me, so I asked Brandon about them that same evening. He denied everything and seemed genuinely hurt that such things had been said about him. As I sat alone that night, I couldn’t stop thinking about what my other children had tried to do.

By morning, my feelings had changed. I decided to rewrite my will and leave everything to Brandon instead. A week later, my biological children began calling to apologize and begged me to reconsider, but the damage had already been done. Their actions made me question whether they cared about me—or simply about what I might leave behind
