The document explained that Ernest and I had placed every major asset into an irrevocable trust for my grandchildren. The Savannah house had been sold, the ranch was gone, and the investments had already been transferred. Every decision had been completed before she ever realized I was planning to leave.

The trust would pay for the children’s education, medical care, and first homes when they became responsible adults. An independent trustee—not Lillian—would approve every distribution. She would never have authority over a single dollar.

As she reached the final paragraph, her hands began shaking. One condition stood out above the rest: if she attempted to challenge the trust or pressure her children for money, every payment would be delayed until they reached forty years old. There would be no shortcuts-
