My Daughter Sold My House Without My Permission..

At 73, Dorothy Calloway was shocked when her daughter, Margaret, announced that she had sold Dorothy’s home without asking her. Margaret used an old power of attorney that had been granted years earlier during Dorothy’s recovery from surgery. Believing she was protecting her aging mother from the risks of living alone, Margaret accepted an offer and even arranged for Dorothy to move into an independent-living community.

After reviewing the legal documents with her longtime attorney, Dorothy discovered that the power of attorney did not authorize the sale of her house. She challenged the agreement in court, even though it strained her relationship with Margaret. Dorothy also reached out to the innocent buyers, who had acted in good faith, and they eventually found another home while the sale was canceled.

As the legal dispute ended, Margaret admitted that fear—not greed—had driven her actions. She had mistaken controlling her mother’s life for caring for her. Dorothy forgave her daughter but made it clear that love never gives someone the right to take away another person’s choices. She revoked the old power of attorney and replaced it with one that had clear limits.

Through family therapy, Dorothy and Margaret rebuilt their relationship with healthier boundaries. Dorothy made practical improvements to her home, including repairing the roof and installing a safer handrail, but those decisions were hers alone. Standing on her porch beside the maple tree she and her late husband had watched grow for decades, Dorothy realized that love and forgiveness could exist without sacrificing her independence—and her home remained hers until she chose otherwise.
