A Flight That Taught Me Not to Judge Too Quickly..

During a seven-hour flight, the child sitting behind me kept kicking my seat. After waiting patiently for nearly an hour, I politely asked his mother if she could stop him. Without looking up from her phone, she replied, “Kids kick. It’s a flight, not a library.” The kicking continued, and when I asked again later, she responded, “Do you have children?” When I said no, she replied, “Then you don’t understand.”

With no improvement, I finally called a flight attendant for help. The situation was handled, but I could feel the mother’s frustration directed at me for the rest of the flight. I assumed she was simply being inconsiderate and stopped trying to understand her perspective.

After we landed and everyone stood to leave, she gently touched my shoulder. Expecting another argument, I turned around, but instead she quietly said, “His dad passed away three weeks ago. He doesn’t sleep anymore, and neither do I.” Only then did I notice how completely exhausted she looked.

Her words stayed with me long after the flight. I still don’t know whether calling the attendant was the right decision, but I realized I had judged her too quickly. Sometimes, the people who seem the most difficult are carrying burdens we cannot see, and a little empathy can change how we view them.
