My Stepmother Asked Me to Stop Cooking Meat in My Childhood Home—Then My Father Banned My Sunday Visits..

My father remarried two years ago, and his wife, Ruth, recently moved into the family home where I grew up. I visit every Sunday with my husband and our two children, and cooking has always been my way of staying connected to the house and to my family. Last month, Ruth told me she had become vegan and asked me to stop cooking meat during our visits. I refused, telling her that I had been cooking in that kitchen since I was twelve and wasn’t going to change my family’s meals because of a lifestyle choice she had recently made.

Ruth was hurt and told me I was being unwelcoming. I responded that the house had been my home long before it became hers. She spoke to my father, and he called me, accusing me of being cruel to a lonely woman who was simply trying to feel comfortable in her new home. I told him that Ruth knew what she was marrying into and that I wasn’t responsible for taking care of her or changing my family’s routines for her.

My father then told me that if I couldn’t respect Ruth, my Sunday visits were no longer welcome. I haven’t returned for three weeks, even though my children keep asking why we no longer visit Grandpa’s house. Looking back, I realize the issue may never have been just about meat or veganism—it was about whether Ruth’s preferences should automatically override the traditions and routines I had shared with my family in that home for years.

I may have been too harsh in the way I spoke to Ruth, especially when I called her lifestyle choice something she had simply “made last month.” At the same time, my father and Ruth also have the right to establish rules in the home where they now live. A better solution might have been for everyone to compromise—perhaps I could prepare meat elsewhere or bring food for my family without making Ruth uncomfortable. The bigger question isn’t who owns the kitchen emotionally; it’s whether a family can make room for everyone’s boundaries without turning a disagreement into a permanent separation.
