The Stranger Who Knew My Father..

At 27, I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, and I had no family left. One day, I went to the pharmacy alone to fill my chemotherapy prescription. The pharmacy technician, Brendan, took my name and suddenly went quiet. He stepped away for ten minutes, then returned with his phone in his hand instead of my prescription.

He showed me a photo of himself with my father, Eli, both wearing scrubs and laughing over coffee. “I’m sorry to ask,” he said, “but were you Eli’s daughter?” Brendan had worked at the pharmacy for 19 years and had worked alongside my father for six of them.

When Brendan’s own father became seriously ill, my dad had helped him through everything—doctors, paperwork, difficult decisions, and the hardest moments. He had even stayed with Brendan the night his father died. My father passed away when I was 22, and I had felt completely alone ever since.

Brendan looked at me and said, “Your dad got me through the worst year of my life. I want to do the same for you.” He became more than a pharmacy technician to me; he became the family I thought I had lost. Since then, we’ve had coffee together every Friday after my chemotherapy. Sometimes, the kindness of someone you barely know can become the family you desperately needed.
