Ever Wondered What Those Lines On Your Rear Windshield Actually Do?

On a freezing morning, watching your rear windshield clear itself while you struggle to scrape the front glass reveals the clever engineering behind those thin, horizontal lines. Known as a defroster grid, these conductive silver-ceramic strips are printed onto the inside of the glass to heat the window from edge to edge without needing air vents or wipers.

When you press the defroster button, an electrical current flows through the grid, warming the glass to melt exterior frost and evaporate interior fog. Because this process consumes significant electrical power, most systems operate on a timer and automatically turn off after several minutes to conserve energy.

Because these conductive strips sit directly on the inside surface of the glass, they are fragile and require gentle care.

Avoid using harsh scrapers or scrubbing across the lines, as a break in any strip will stop that section from heating until it is repaired with a conductive touch-up kit. READ MORE BELOW
