My husband died of a heart attack just three days after our daughter was born, leaving me to raise her alone. Seven years later, she came home from a sleepover carrying the same pink blanket she had been wrapped in at birth, complete with her father’s initials embroidered on it. I learned that a paramedic had held my newborn daughter in that blanket for nearly forty minutes while doctors fought to save her father. The blanket had accidentally been left in the ambulance, and the paramedic kept it for seven years, never knowing what became of the baby she had comforted that night. By coincidence, her niece became my daughter’s best friend, and when the paramedic recognized me, she quietly sent the blanket home with her niece. She never asked for anything—she simply wanted to return a small piece of my husband to his daughter.
