Six years after my husband and I adopted our son, a woman approached him at the park and whispered, “I missed you so much,” frightening me enough to call the police. I soon learned she was Elena, the paramedic who had saved his life as a newborn after he was abandoned in a freezing gas-station bathroom. She had performed CPR for eleven minutes, just months after losing her own baby, and later quietly followed his case to make sure he was safe. She never contacted us because she didn’t want to interfere with our family; she simply wanted to know that the baby she had fought so hard to save had grown up happy.
