It is with incredibly heavy hearts that music lovers across the globe are mourning the passing of Bob Weir, the legendary co-founder, rhythm guitarist, and driving force of the Grateful Dead. He passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, at 78, leaving a massive void in American rock history. His family said he was surrounded by loved ones after courageously battling cancer and underlying lung issues.

Weir’s journey began at 17 when he co-founded the Warlocks in 1964 alongside Jerry Garcia and Pigpen, a band that soon became the Grateful Dead. Known for his distinctive chord voicings and charismatic stage presence, he became an irreplaceable part of the group and a key influence on its legendary sound.

**Bob Weir** masterminded and co-wrote many of the band’s enduring classics, including “Sugar Magnolia,” “One More Saturday Night,” and “Mexicali Blues.” After the Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995 following Garcia’s death, he continued carrying the music forward through RatDog, Furthur, Wolf Bros, and Dead & Company.

Beyond music, Weir championed animal rights and environmental causes while constantly exploring new musical territory. His final months reflected his lifelong resilience, as he performed during the Dead’s 60th-anniversary celebration.
