At 26, I donated my kidney to my father despite his desperate pleas not to, believing I could save his life. He survived the transplant, and I spent three precious weeks by his side before an unexpected complication took him from me. A month later, I found a letter he had left for me revealing that doctors had warned him his body would reject the transplant, but he never told me because he didn’t want to take away my hope. He wrote that those three weeks together had been the happiest of his life and that, even though I couldn’t save him from death, I had given him love, comfort, and precious time. For the first time, I realized I had saved my father—not by giving him more years, but by making his final weeks full of love.
