He Went From Busking on the Streets to Winning an Oscar — Now …… Is Gone at 56

Singer-songwriter and actor has died at the age of 56 following a motorcycle crash on July 29, 2026. His sudden death shocked fans across Ireland and around the world, bringing an abrupt end to the career of an artist who had built his success from remarkably humble beginnings.

He first became known as the frontman of the Irish rock band The Frames and also appeared as an actor in the 1991 film The Commitments. He later gained international recognition through the film Once, in which he starred alongside Markéta Irglová. Their song “Falling Slowly” went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008.

Glen Hansard journey was especially remarkable because he had started his musical career as a street performer in Dublin. Over the years, he became a respected solo artist and collaborated with major names in music, including Eddie Vedder. Beyond music, Hansard was also known for his charitable work and his annual Christmas Eve street performances, which helped raise money for people experiencing homelessness.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians, friends and fans. His funeral in Dublin later brought together major artists including Bono, Eddie Vedder and The Edge, reflecting the enormous impact Hansard had on the music community.
