The Little Boy Who Remembered My Kindness..

For three years, my neighbor’s son, little Marcus, knocked on my door at 6 a.m. every morning because his mom worked nights. I packed his lunch, drove him to school, and helped him whenever he needed me. I never asked for anything in return—I simply wanted to make things a little easier for him.

Then one day, I received an eviction notice and went to tell his mother. She looked me up and down and coldly said, “I always knew you were too nosy. Honestly? Good riddance!” before slamming the door in my face. I sat in my car and sobbed for hours, feeling completely lost and alone.

Then someone tapped on my window. I looked up and froze. It was Marcus, wearing his backpack, his eyes red from crying. He pressed a folded piece of paper against the glass. Inside was a crayon drawing of the two of us standing happily in front of my apartment beneath a huge yellow sun.

At the bottom, in his careful handwriting, he had written, “You are the best person I have ever met. I saved my birthday money. It’s $45. I want you to have it.” Two crumpled twenties and a five were taped to the back. I couldn’t take his money, but I kept the drawing. Even now, it reminds me that kindness can come back to you in the most unexpected ways—and sometimes a small act of love can brighten someone’s darkest moment.
