The Day I Finally Chose My Wife

At the hospital, the doctor told me Emily had become severely dehydrated and exhausted, and that collapsing while alone with a baby could have ended very differently. I sat beside her bed holding her hand while Noah slept against my chest. When Emily finally opened her eyes, the first thing she whispered was, “Where’s your mom?” I swallowed hard. “Gone.” Then I told her what I had seen and what I had heard. When I returned home, Diane was still standing beside the suitcase on the porch. She had called my aunt, my sister, and even my father, apparently expecting someone to convince me to change my mind. Instead, I handed her a printed list of boundaries. She would not enter our home without an invitation. She would not criticize Emily, interfere with our parenting, or demand that my wife serve her. “You’re my mother,” I told her, “but Emily is my family too. I won’t sacrifice her peace just to keep you comfortable.”

Diane stared at me for a long moment before asking, “So you’re choosing her over me?” I shook my head. “I’m choosing my wife and my son—and I’m finally choosing to be the husband I promised Emily I’d be.” For once, my mother had no clever response. She picked up her suitcase and walked toward her car. Before closing the door, she looked back at the house, but I didn’t move.
