The Secret Buried Inside the Ice

I stepped closer despite Mr. Callahan’s warning, and my breath caught. Inside the cracked ice was a metal lockbox wrapped in a faded blue blanket. Beside it was a plastic identification card bearing my late husband’s name. Mr. Callahan immediately called the police, while I stood frozen, remembering something my husband had said during his final week in the hospital: “If anything ever happens, don’t trust anyone who says they’re helping you.”

When the officers arrived, they carefully removed the box and opened it under supervision. Inside were photographs, bank records, and a small flash drive. But the most disturbing item was a handwritten note addressed to me. It explained that my husband had discovered someone had been stealing money from his business shortly before he died. He had gathered evidence, but he became too sick to confront the person responsible. The final line made my hands tremble: “If you are reading this, they know where you live.”

An investigator examined the photographs and suddenly recognized one of the men standing beside my husband in several pictures. It was a former business partner who had disappeared shortly after my husband’s death. The police had been searching for him for years because millions of dollars had vanished from the company’s accounts. Then an officer looked toward the street-camera footage Mr. Callahan had saved. The vehicle that delivered the ice belonged to a company registered under that same man’s name.

That night, the police placed officers outside my home while investigators copied everything from the box. Before leaving, one detective told me something that changed the entire case: “Your husband didn’t leave this here by accident. He hid it somewhere only you would eventually find.” I looked through the window at the melting ice and finally understood why it had been delivered before sunrise. Whoever brought it wanted me to discover the evidence—but they also wanted to know whether I would call the police. And the next morning, someone left another package on my doorstep
