I Was Fired by Email—But I Kept Showing Up, and the CEO Eventually Noticed..

Last year, I was fired by email with no warning, meeting, or severance. Strangely, the company never revoked my email, removed me from Slack, or stopped sending me calendar invitations. Desperate and embarrassed to admit I was unemployed, I kept joining meetings, giving project updates, replying to emails, and even visiting the office as if nothing had changed.

For weeks, I maintained the illusion while secretly applying for jobs. Then one afternoon, the CEO messaged me, saying he liked my ideas and wanted me to lead a new project. Instead of accepting immediately, I finally told him the truth: I had been fired months earlier but continued showing up because I still believed in the company and cared about the work.

The CEO was shocked and impressed. He investigated and discovered that HR had quietly downsized several employees without properly informing the board or even the CEO. Because of the confusion, I had remained in the company’s systems and continued participating in meetings. The CEO then officially offered me the project lead position.

Looking back, I realized that sometimes circumstances are messy and opportunities appear in the strangest ways. I wasn’t showing up for a paycheck—I was showing up because I still believed in what I did. And when someone finally noticed, that commitment changed everything.
