The Secret Behind Thursday Nights

Patrick finally exhaled. “Your mother has been going to the hospital every Thursday night.” My stomach dropped. “The hospital?” He nodded. “There’s a rehabilitation wing there. Your father’s old friend, Mr. Harris, has been recovering from a stroke. Your mother visits him every week.” I stared at him, confused. Patrick continued quietly. “But that isn’t the whole reason. She asked me to drive her because she didn’t want you to know she was paying for his treatment.”

I felt my anger disappear, replaced by confusion. Patrick explained that after Dad died, Mom discovered that Mr. Harris had been struggling financially and could no longer afford the rehabilitation he needed. Dad had considered him family, and Mom believed helping him was one final way of honoring the man she had loved. She sold several pieces of jewelry, withdrew money from a small savings account, and secretly covered the medical bills. “She knew you would try to stop her,” Patrick said. “Not because you’re selfish, but because you’ve been trying to protect her since your father died. She wanted one thing in her life that wasn’t about being watched, managed, or treated like someone fragile.”

I went inside and found Mom sitting beside the piano, holding one of Dad’s old photographs. When she saw my face, she immediately understood. “Patrick told you.” I nodded. Tears filled her eyes. “I didn’t want you worrying about me again.” I sat beside her and took her hand. “Mom, you don’t have to hide your life from me.” She gave me a trembling smile. Then she confessed one more thing: the reason she wore Dad’s old blue dress every Thursday was because Mr. Harris always played the songs they used to dance to when they were young. “Your father loved those songs,” she whispered. “For a few hours every week, I get to remember him without feeling completely broken.”

The following Thursday, I asked if I could come along. Mom hesitated, then smiled. “Only if you promise not to make it a big thing.” So the three of us went together. At the rehabilitation center, Mr. Harris was waiting beside a small piano. When he saw Mom, he smiled and reached for her hand. Patrick turned on the music, and Mom slowly began to dance beside the wheelchair, tears shining in her eyes. I finally understood the secret she had protected so fiercely. She hadn’t been hiding another life from me. She had been quietly rebuilding the life grief had taken from her. And from that Thursday onward, I stopped asking where my mother was going—and started asking whether I could dance with her…
