Missing Boy’s Chilling Four-Word Comment To Rescuer Who Found Him Six Years After He Vanished

In 2017, 11-year-old Alex Batty disappeared while on a family holiday in Spain with his mother and grandfather, who did not have legal custody of him. For the next six years, Alex lived with them in alternative spiritual communities across Spain and France, largely outside conventional society. His disappearance remained a mystery to his family and authorities as he moved between remote communities with his relatives.

In December 2023, at age 17, Alex finally decided to escape. He walked through the Pyrenees mountains for four days in heavy rain, determined to reach safety and return to the United Kingdom. A French delivery driver eventually found him on the roadside. Alex then revealed the shocking reason for his journey, telling the driver, “My mother kidnapped me,” bringing an extraordinary six-year disappearance to an end.

After Alex returned to the UK, police launched an investigation into his disappearance and the circumstances surrounding his time abroad. Authorities examined his claims and worked to establish what had happened during the years he was missing. However, the investigation faced major difficulties, including Alex’s reluctance to provide evidence that could result in his mother or grandfather being imprisoned.

By January 2025, British police closed the investigation without making arrests. Alex had consistently expressed that he did not want his family members jailed, while investigators also lacked sufficient cooperative witness evidence to support a prosecution. Although the criminal case ended without charges, Alex’s return brought an extraordinary missing-person story to a close: after six years away, he had found a way to escape, cross the mountains, and make his way back to the life he had left behind at just 11 years old.
