The Orange Extension Cord

Last week, I went into my backyard for some quiet time when I noticed an orange extension cord running across my lawn from my neighbor’s garage directly into an outlet on my house. At first, I thought they might have connected it by mistake, but it soon became clear that they were using my electricity without asking. Since we had always been friendly, I felt more surprised than angry.

Later, I calmly told my neighbor that the outlet was connected to my electricity meter. He laughed and said it was “just a little power,” which didn’t exactly make me feel better. Rather than argue, I installed a small lockable cover over the outlet to establish a simple boundary and prevent it from happening again.

The next morning, I found a note from my neighbor in my mailbox. He sincerely apologized and admitted that he hadn’t considered how his actions might affect me. He said he felt embarrassed, never intended to cause problems, and hoped we could move past it. His honesty changed my feelings completely, so I went over that afternoon to thank him. Our short conversation turned into a meaningful discussion about communication, assumptions, and respecting boundaries.

By the end of our conversation, we understood each other better and even laughed about the whole incident. What could have become a source of resentment instead strengthened our trust. That simple orange extension cord reminded me that misunderstandings don’t have to damage relationships. With honesty, patience, and goodwill, even an awkward situation can become a valuable lesson in peaceful living with your neighbors.
