During Macy Gray’s July 2022 appearance on the Today Show, keyboardist Billy Wes was asked to turn his T-shirt inside out because it read “Free Brittney Griner” in bold white letters. Wes wore the shirt to support the WNBA star, who was detained in Russia and facing drug charges. Gray defended the message, saying it was about helping someone in a terrible situation, not politics.
