At 71, after retiring as a nurse, I lived alone in a small apartment. My 39-year-old daughter had married into wealth and gradually stopped calling, even though she lived only 20 minutes away in a six-bedroom house. When I fell and spent six days in the hospital, she visited just once, while her husband sent flowers. After I returned home, I found an envelope on my door, assuming it was from my daughter—perhaps a card or money to ease her guilt.
