My mom always told me my father had left us, so when he died when I was 17, I believed I wasn’t wanted and didn’t even attend his funeral. The next day, a lawyer contacted me with an urgent file my father had left behind. Inside was a letter explaining that my mother’s wealthy family had used their connections and money to keep him away from me, burying him in legal paperwork until he could no longer afford to fight. He had never stopped trying. Diagnosed with a terminal illness five months earlier, he feared contacting me could violate the restraining order, so he wrote everything down and instructed his lawyer to give it to me after his death.
