While working the night shift at a grocery store, I caught a teenage boy trying to leave with baby formula and bread because his baby sister hadn’t eaten all day. Though store policy required me to report him, I gave him the food and let him go, and he thanked me by giving me a small blue star charm his sister loved. I was later formally warned and eventually laid off, but while applying for a job at a local food bank, the recruiter noticed the charm and learned why I had it. He explained that the food bank gave identical stars to children in need and, impressed by my actions, hired me.
