At 16, I was kicked out by my family after getting pregnant, and when labor began at 2 AM, I took a taxi to the ER alone. The driver’s constant staring made me uncomfortable, but after I gave birth, he returned to my hospital room with a tiny baby onesie and a note saying, “My wife and I raised three kids alone. Call us if you need anything.” I tucked the note away and forgot about it—until six weeks later, when my daughter suddenly stopped breathing at 4 AM.
