I’m 60, and after my divorce, fashion became my way of rediscovering myself and rebuilding my confidence, but my DIL constantly criticized my style, once calling it “desperate” to my son. I ignored her comments to avoid family drama, until one day, while taking my 9-year-old grandson Christmas shopping, he looked at my dress and casually said, “Ew, that dress is horrible! Mom says you dress like that because you’re old and lonely and want people to feel sorry for you.” Heartbroken, I stayed quiet and continued shopping, but then I spotted a plain, ugly gray T-shirt on clearance and decided to buy it. At Christmas dinner, I wrapped it beautifully and gave it to my DIL, smiling as I told her it would be perfect since she didn’t seem to care about dressing up. Her face turned red, the room fell silent, and my son looked completely confused. After that, I stopped taking my grandson on outings and offering my DIL favors, choosing to distance myself after years of hurtful remarks. Now, half the family thinks I went too far, but I feel she finally got a taste of her own medicine. Was I wrong for giving her that petty Christmas gift, or had I tolerated her disrespect for far too long?
