Cicadas may sound alarming when they swarm, but they generally won’t destroy your garden or harm vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Their main threat is to young trees and shrubs, where females lay eggs in slender branches, causing them to dry out and break. Mature trees usually withstand cicada activity, although some smaller branches may suffer damage. Protect young trees with fine mesh netting and, if possible, avoid planting new trees during peak cicada seasons.
