My husband of nine years died in the ER last week, and among his belongings, I found eight unread messages from a contact named “Emily.” The last message read, “Your wife deserves to know.” When I called the number, a little girl answered and said her mother was in an accident at the same hospital I had just left. I rushed back and found Emily badly injured. She told me my husband had crawled to her burning car after the crash, called for help, and stayed beside her, holding his phone to light her way and promising he wouldn’t leave her. Before collapsing, he handed her his phone and whispered, “If I don’t make it, tell my wife.” He had saved Emily’s life before losing his own. I sat with her until her family arrived, and since then, we’ve stayed in touch. She was the last person to see my husband alive, and through her, I’ve discovered the kind of man he was when nobody was watching—a man who gave everything to save a stranger.
