My husband of nine years died in the ER last week, and among his belongings, I found eight unread messages from a woman named Emily. The last one said, “Your wife deserves to know.” When I called her number, a little child answered and said Emily was in the hospital after an accident—the same hospital I had just left. I rushed back and found Emily badly injured. She told me my husband had stopped to save her from a burning wreck, called for help, and stayed beside her, holding his phone so she could see the light and promising he wouldn’t leave her. Before collapsing, he gave her his phone and whispered, “If I don’t make it, tell my wife.” He died trying to save her life. I stayed with Emily until her family arrived, and since then, we’ve grown close. She was the last person to see my husband alive, and now she’s helping me understand the man he was when nobody was watching—a man whose final act was to save a stranger.
