At 68, I never imagined I’d watch my own son-in-law, Deputy Craig Hanson, have my 17-year-old grandson Tyler’s car towed over a cracked taillight. Tyler had bought his 2008 Pontiac himself with money earned from working summers, and he had already ordered a replacement part. But Craig stopped him in front of half the town, issued a violation, and called a tow truck anyway. Tyler had lived with me since he was 14, after struggling under Craig’s strict rules at home. I had raised him through Sunday dinners, school lunches, and difficult years, and I knew how hard he worked to earn everything he owned. When I took him to the county tow yard, I paid the $280 release fee from my own retirement money, while Tyler insisted on paying his own $130 ticket. His ears turned red as he promised to repay me every dollar. I told him I knew he would, because that boy had never expected anyone else to solve his problems. He drove the car home carefully and parked it in my garage until the replacement light arrived. What Craig saw as a simple equipment violation was, to me, another painful reminder of how hard he had made life for my grandson. Sometimes, protecting a child doesn’t mean fighting every battle for him; it means standing beside him, helping him through the unfair moments, and reminding him that he never has to face the world alone. ❤️
