A bright red-orange mushroom appearing overnight in your yard is likely a stinkhorn, a fungus known for its strong rotten-meat smell. Its unpleasant odor attracts flies, which help spread its spores, while the mushroom itself usually disappears within a day or two. Stinkhorns generally don’t harm lawns or plants, and removing them is optional, although you should keep pets and children from eating them. Never eat a wild stinkhorn or its egg-like stage based on a photo identification, as poisonous mushrooms can look remarkably similar.
